Is coconut oil healthy for your baby? There is a lot of contradictory information out there. If you are worried about the safety of breast milk, or if you are breastfeeding and you have a baby at home, it is a good idea to know what the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends.
The answer is yes, coconut oil is safe for babies and for adults. It is used in skincare products, to soften facial skin, to take care of dry skin. But the information that has been released so far is not up to date.
The thing is, as far as products with natural ingredients go, many have come out in recent years that contain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and other substances that are considered “biotics”. These are supposed to aid in the development of the immune system, digestion, the elimination of waste and so on. And many of them are made from plant sources, such as green tea.
Antioxidants are considered “biotics” too. Many foods have these, but they are not considered “biotics” because the theory goes is that they make the body function well. So it would be hard to recommend a product with antioxidants, as it would seem to aid the development of the immune system.
What we want to know, however, is how safe is coconut oil for humans and our babies. And for adults, which also make use of it, some of the information seems to be conflicting. There has been a press release in the past that says that there have been cases of possible inflammation in some studies, but this seems to be in the context of the use of corticosteroids for arthritis. And that seems to be fairly rare.
Coconut oil should, however, be used sparingly for the purposes of washing and moisturizing the skin, in addition to other moisturizers. And the term “soy” should be avoided. Soy can contain an enzyme called isoflavones that are considered by some to be “safe”, but the scientific literature is quite divided over the issue.
But is coconut oil healthy for human consumption? In general, experts do not advise the use of coconut oil for skin treatment. There are other choices such as cocoa butter, which is not derived from the coconuts, but contains similar antioxidants.
The reason for this is that coconut oil is not compatible with soy and may cause an allergic reaction. And the combination of the two oils is usually not recommended.
However, one can use coconut oil to make smoothies, which is another matter. The content is not harmful, and is a natural ingredient that could be safely used to make these delicacies. One can have it mixed with other healthy ingredients, or even fresh fruit.
So is coconut oil safe for babies? Well, it is safe, provided that the mother is not allergic to coconut. There is no evidence that it causes a condition like asthma.
It is also safe if the mother is not pregnant, but is taking large amounts of multivitamins, because it is considered safe. And it is safe if it is being used for cleansing the system. If one drinks it, or supplements it, it is important to pay attention to the ingredients, because one cannot depend on products like this to tell you whether it is “safe”.
So, is coconut oil safe for human consumption? The answer, if it is safe for a baby, would be yes.
